ROOT CANAL THERAPY: A GENTLE MODERN PRACTICE
When people hear ‘root canal therapy,’ they be intimidated. However, modern dental tools and practices have made this procedure safer, gentle and more restorative than ever before.
Dental professionals are now equipped to preserve much more of the natural tooth and are able to maximize patient comfort while shortening recovery time. With modern dental techniques in skilled hands, root canal therapy today has become a far more therapeutic process.
WHAT DOES ROOT CANAL THERAPY DO?
If a bacterial infection reaches a tooth’s pulp – the inner center of soft tissue, blood vessels and nerves – it will cause significant pain. The infection could spread through the blood vessels to pose serious health risks elsewhere in the body. If left untreated, an extraction may be required.
Root canal therapy preserves the tooth by eliminating the infected tissue. Dr. Lim and his specialists are very proficient in endodontic treatment and they have the skills and experience to perform the procedure well.
Dr. Lim or the specialist removes the infected soft tissue from inside the tooth. The root’s canals are then cleaned out and purified, removing any trace of infection. A special material called gutta percha is placed into the root canals to provide support and stability. If necessary, stabilizing posts will also be added.
Dr. Lim or the specialist then packs a filling into the open space, and finally the tooth is capped with a crown to protect it. With the infection gone, any tooth pain should disappear quickly, and once the tooth has healed, it can be used as normal without tenderness or sensitivity.
WHEN SHOULD I SEE THE DENTIST?
A tooth infection should be dealt with at the first sign of trouble to preserve as much of the tooth as possible. Call the dentist as soon as you observe any of these symptoms:
- Severe tooth pain
- Sensitivity to heat and cold
- Tenderness when touching or chewing
- Swelling, especially in the cheek
It is also possible for a tooth infection to display no symptoms, which makes it essential to maintain your regular dental visits so that any problems may be detected and dealt with early on.
